This brilliant group of tea growers are working together to transform the whole of Kenya’s smallholder tea industry.

They’re fighting for fairer prices, for gender equality and for better representation as they grow tea that travels across the world – including to the UK.

They have already helped raise the green leaf price for every smallholder tea grower in Kenya – but together we need to do much more.

“Right now, as we are talking Nyeri Chai Farmers Association is very productive. If they continue to grow, our lives as tea farmers will improve. It would be great to see more farmers embrace crop diversification i.e. plant avocado or macadamias. This will provide farmers with an alternative source of income. This can be spearheaded by the association.”

— Joseph Mwangi Thuku, tea grower and member of Nyeri Chai Farmers Association

3 long term goals

  1. To fight for fair wages in Kenya’s tea sector.

  2. To get smallholders represented in the decisions that matter.

  3. To promote women leaders in the smallholder tea sector.

“If I were alone - it would be very difficult for my family and me. The association is our source of strength.”

Edward Ngumi, tea grower

A year of sponsorship for Nyeri could allow them to…

Expand

The Nyeri Chai Farmers Association have plans to expand their membership, recruiting more smallholder tea growers to strengthen their numbers and represent the views of more farmers in Kenya.

Grow their influence

The Association has aspirations to help farmers to increase their representation on tea processing factory boards, so they can be part of the decision-making process.

Hold tea buyers to account

The Nyeri Chai Farmers Association have fought for higher prices for every tea grower in Kenya, and won a 25% price increase - but they need to hold tea buyers to account – ensuring that the minimum green leaf price they have fought for is paid in full across the region.
