Recommendations for the Directive on Unfair Trading Practices negotiations

October 2018

We welcome the European Commission’s proposal on Unfair Trading Practices in business-to-business relationships in the food supply chain. Unfair Trading Practices (UTPs) are the result of extreme power imbalances in the food supply chain and mean farmers, workers and small food businesses are subjected to unreasonable costs and risks. Unfair supply chains are unsustainable and contribute to food waste, precarious working conditions, risks to food safety, reduced consumer choice and poverty. Tackling UTPs is therefore in the interest of everyone from farmers to consumers.

This joint briefing sets out five key priorities for effective enforcement against Unfair Trading Practices and highlights amendments to the Commission’s proposal that should be prioritised in the inter-institutional negotiations on the final text of the legislation.
